The Palace of Versailles has been listed as a World Heritage Site for 30 years and is one of the greatest achievements in French 17th century art. Louis XIII's old hunting pavilion was transformed and extended by his son, Louis XIV, when he installed the Court and government there in 1682. A succession of kings continued to embellish the Palace up until the French Revolution. Today the Palace contains 2,300 rooms spread over 63,154 m2. In 1789, the French Revolution forced Louis XVI to leave Versailles for Paris. The Palace would never again be a royal residence and a new role was assigned to it in the 19th century, when it became the Museum of the History of France in 1837 by order of King Louis-Philippe, who came to the throne in 1830.
Claud Monet’s House & Garden. There are two parts in Monet's garden: a flower garden called Clos Normand in front of the house and a Japanese inspired water garden on the other side of the road. The two parts of Monet's garden contrast and complement one another.
Rouen, capital of the northern French region of Normandy, is a port city on the river Seine. Important in the Roman era and Middle Ages, it has Gothic churches, such as Saint-Maclou and Saint-Ouen, and a cobblestoned pedestrian center with medieval half-timbered houses. The skyline is dominated by the spires of Cathédrale Notre-Dame, much-painted by Impressionist Claude Monet.

Rouen where you will walk in the footsteps of a local hero Saint Roman; a Viking chieftain Rollon who was the first ruler of Normandy; a fearless warrior Joan of Arc; a hardworking seamstress Mathilde and an inspired impressionist Claude Monet, an illiterate docker and a chef who brought French cuisine to the American public, Julia Child.
At the same time Rouen 's architecture will unfold the story of Normandy capital in front of you, as the city still preserves traces of different periods of its history regardless of the bombings that took place during the Second World War. You will dive into Rouen's past by means of local stories and legends to emerge in Rouen's busy present day life.
Caen. William the Conqueror’s hometown, is a lively and dynamic city. Known for its historical buildings built during the reign of William the Conqueror, who was buried there, and for the Battle for Caen, heavy fighting that took place in and around Caen during the Battle of Normandy in 1944, destroying much of the city. The city has now preserved the memory by erecting a memorial and a museum dedicated to peace, the Mémorial de Caen.
Honfleur is a city in northern France's Normandy region. It's on the estuary where the Seine river meets the English Channel. The Vieux-Bassin (old harbor), lined with 16th- to 18th-century townhouses, has been a subject for artists including Claude Monet and native son Eugène Boudin. Nearby is 15th-century St. Catherine's Church, a vaulted timber structure erected by shipbuilders.

Day 6
FULL DAY TOUR US SECTOR, OMAHA BEACH, POINTE DU HOC AND THE AMERICAN CEMETERY, CAEN AND PEGASUS BRIDGE

Spend time today to see Pointe du Hoc, the best-known Bloody Omaha Beach and the heart-breaking U.S cemetery, for yet another perspective of the beach from the high ground. Your guide will give you time on your own to either stay longer in the cemetery or save time for the Visitor Centre. In the afternoon travel to Caen to visit the Memorial and time permitting to see Pegasus Bridge, you can discuss timings locally with your driver/guide. In the evening arrive in Bayeux and check into your Chateau for an overnight stay.
La Pointe du Hoc is a promontory with a 35-metre cliff overlooking the English Channel on the northwestern coast of Normandy in the Calvados department, France. In World War II, Pointe du Hoc was the location of a series of German bunkers and machine gun posts.
Omaha Beach: The most famous and most difficult of the five D-day beaches. It took the highest casualties, due in particular to its topography: it was the only beach with high ground just beyond. The impossible task here was to get off the beach as quickly as possible in order to reach the top of the bluff, when the only four exit roads were still blocked off by the German defenders.
The air-bombing and naval bombardment that were supposed to disorganize them, almost completely missed. You will understand why the 1st and 29th Infantry Divisions suffered more than 3 800 casualties (dead, wounded or missing) to make this battle a victory. They had to jump out of their Landing Craft and made their way out of the cold water, past the terrible beach obstacles, as graphically depicted in “Saving Private Ryan”

Day 7
FULL DAY US SECTOR - UTAH BEACH, ST MERE EGLISE, AIRBORNE CEMETERY
Meet your driver/guide this morning and enjoy a short tour of Bayeux and then travel the short distance to La Cambe German Cemetery. Explore St Mere Eglise and the airborne museum and of course Utah beach. This evening you will travel to Lieu-dit Boucéel and check into your Chateau for your overnight stay. You will bid farewell to your Normandy guide on arrival.
Utah Beach: Closest to the Germans around Cherbourg and quite separated from the other beaches, it could have been a disaster. But Utah was rather lightly defended and had the great privilege to be protected by the American paratroopers (who had been in the area for several hours already). As they jumped out of their Landing Craft at La Madeleine, the first soldiers of the 4th Infantry Division were led by General Theo Roosevelt Jr. On the first day, 23.000 landed here and casualties remained low under 200.
Saint-Mere-Eglise is strategically situated on the main N13 highway to Cherbourg and only a few miles away from the coast, this farming community became the very center of the huge airborne operation (with 15.000 U.S paratroopers) that started during the night before D-day. In order to stop the German counter-attacks from the north, the village was planned to be taken rapidly by the nearby-dropped 505th P.I.R. But some of these soldiers had the misfortune to end up here, right on the town full of Germans.
La Cambe German Cemetery: Originally started as an American cemetery in 1944 (for both Americans and Germans), after the war this cemetery became the largest German one in Normandy with over 21.000 buried here. It covers more than 15 acres and is surrounded by over 1.200 maples part of the Garden of Peace. The centre is in the form of a 20-feet mound (where 300 are buried) topped by a big black stone cross and two statues.

Chateau Royal D’Amboise. Imagine a palace on a promontory above the Loire and imagine the hanging gardens between heaven and earth … Amboise was one of the favourite sites of the kings of France when they transformed their country during the Renaissance period. Anne de Bretagne, François Ier or Léonard de Vinci (buried in the chapel of the castle) are familiar faces here which we rediscover. A living castle open to nature, a haven of peace for more than 90 species of birds, Amboise also offers a 360 ° view of landscapes listed as World Heritage by UNESCO.
The history of the Château de Chenonceau is defined by a an almost uninterrupted succession of women who built, embellished, protected, restored and saved it. The first château was a medieval château dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, of which only the dungeon remains: the Tour des Marques. The château in its current form was built between 1513 and 1517, by Thomas Bohier and above all his wife, Catherine Briçonnet. The château in its current form was built between 1513 and 1517, by Thomas Bohier and above all his wife, Catherine Briçonnet.
The Château de Chambord is one of the most recognisable châteaux in the world because of its very distinctive French Renaissance architecture, which blends traditional French medieval forms with classical Renaissance structures. The building was constructed by the king of France, Francis I. Chambord is the largest château in the Loire Valley; it was built to serve as a hunting lodge for Francis I, who maintained his royal residences at the Château de Blois and Amboise. The original design of the château is attributed to the Tuscan architect Domenico da Cortona; Leonardo da Vinci may have also influenced the design.
